Rohit Sharma angry at KL Rahul Photograph: (X)
India’s fielding on Sunday was in sharp contrast to New Zealand, who had taken exceptional catches in their Champions Trophy 2025 encounter. KL Rahul, who has been played ahead of Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper, earned the ire of skipper Rohit Sharma. Indian spinners had come into attack early and put the Kiwi batters under pressure.
The incident in question happened when Axar Patel was bowling to Kane Williamson. New Zealand’s former skipper went to cut the ball and got a huge edge of his bat that was dropped by KL Rahul. This left Rohit visibly upset, who didn’t mince his words when speaking to his wicketkeeper. Even Virat Kohli had hands on his head after the drop of a crucial batter.

Earlier in the innings, Varun Chakravarthy had kicked the ball into the boundary ropes for a four. Hardik Pandya bowled a no-ball and the resulting free-hit saw Will Young go for a huge down the ground. Chakravarthy went for a catch and dropped the ball and later kicked it into the boundary cushions.
Kane Williamson’s fifty keeps New Zealand in the hunt
Chasing 250 to win, New Zealand saw Will Young open the batting with Rachin Ravindra. Hardik Pandya got India their first wicket when Ravindra’s upper-cut flew straight to Patel, who was standing in the third-man boundary. Axar dove in front and took an amazing catch as Ravindra was out for six runs.
Will Young was the next man to be dismissed when he inside edged the ball back onto his stumps. The batter was out for 22 runs and Chakravarthy got his first wicket of the game. Daryl Mitchell came out to bat and failed to get going as he found the pitch tough to score runs off.
Kane Williamson, meanwhile, reached his fifty to keep his team afloat in the chase. The former Kiwi skipper had been under huge pressure after two successive failures with the bat. Kuldeep Yadav then got the key scalp of Mitchell for 17, who was given out LBW and decided to review the call. The third umpire saw nothing wrong with the on-field call and asked the umpire to stay with his decision.
