Match number 16 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw hosts Lucknow Super Giants take on Mumbai Indians in a key encounter. Former West Indian pacer Ian Bishop welcomed both teams’ captains. It was Hardik Pandya who called out the toss correctly and chose to bowl first, as there could be dew coming into play during the second innings.

Rishabh Pant could be heard ‘crying’ in jest after losing the toss and hugging Pandya before the MI skipper made his way to have a chat with the presenter. 

Both sides made one change to the team as Rohit Sharma was rested for the game. Rohit Sharma had injured his knee during the nets, with Raj Angad Bawa replacing him. For the home team, Akash Deep made his way into the XI for left-arm spinner Siddharth.

Mitchell Marsh, who was out for a golden in the last game scored his third fifty of the tournament. At the end of the six overs, the home team had raced to 69 for no loss to set-up the side for a huge score on the board. Trent Boult, should have picked a wicket in the first over but none of the MI bowlers went up for an appeal. 

The incident happened in the fourth ball of the first over when Marsh when for a hoick. Boult was left in shock along with the rest of his teammates when the replays came up on the big screen. Earlier in the day, Suryakumar was awarded a special shirt as the 34-year-old notched up his 100th appearance in the MI shirt.

After just six runs being scored in the first over, Deepak Chahar was taken to the cleaners by Marsh and Aiden Markram. The South African batter began the second over with a four, as Marsh hit two more boundaries to give LSG a blazing start with the bat. Boult was hit for 11 runs in his second over with Marsh hit a four and splendid six over covers to signal his intentions. 

Ashwani Kumar who made his debut in the last game conceded just three runs from his first over. Mitchell Santner brought into bowl the fifth over of the innings was hit for 11 runs as LSG raced to 46 for no loss from the five overs. The final over before the powerplay saw Marsh hit Kumar for 23 runs in the over as the batter reached his fifty off 27 balls.
