It was a day where Afghanistan wrote their names in the history books. Rashid Khan saw his side make it to the Super 8 phase of the T20 World Cup with a 7 wicket win over Papua New Guinea in Trinidad and Tobago. This was the third win of the campaign for the Afghans who are now top of the Group C table.

Fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi was given the man of the match for his excellent bowling. The 23-year-old ended the day with figures of 3/16 from his 4 overs to take his tournament wicket tally to 12 wickets.

The best moment of the day came when Farooqi was interviewed towards the end of the game. The left-arm pacer’s answers in English had skipper Rashid Khan in splits which was captured on television to show the upbeat mood in the Afghanistan camp.

Afghanistan romp home to easy win and knock out New Zealand

Afghanistan’s win over Papua New Guinea sadly was the end of the tournament for New Zealand. Kane Williamson’s side had started the T20 World Cup with the huge 84-run loss to Afghanistan before going down to West Indies by 13 runs in the next match.

At the end of the game, Fazalhaq Farooqi said “I want to congratulate people of Afghanistan for qualifying to the Super 8, I think we've played some good cricket. I was in the IPL. Unfortunately I didn't get a game, so I came here and gave myself the strength to come and perform"

Fazalhaq Farooqi also said "I have two plans while bowling - just get wickets if there's any swing or seam, if there's no movement, I just bowl in the right areas and keep it simple. We just need to give our 100% and do our best”

Kiplin Doriga was the best batter for PNG with 27 runs from 32 balls as they were all out for 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Gulbadin Naib then scored 49 not out to help the Afghans get over the post with 29 balls and 7 wickets in hand. The next match for Afghanistan is against West Indies and the winner of that match will face India in their first match of Super 8 campaign on 20th June.
