Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) player Mitchell Owen did the job with the ball as he claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket. That feat was achieved in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 game between San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom. It was Glenn Maxwell who led Washington, which went on to win the game by 12 runs. The loss also ended Unicorns unbeaten start to the season, which saw them win six games in a row.
The Unicorns were chasing 170 runs to win the game and had started well as Matthew Short and Finn Allen batted aggressively. The pair added 51 for the opening wicket in five overs. Allen was the first man out for seven bowled by former Sri Lankan spinner Amila Aponso. The second wicket to fall was that of Jake Fraser-McGurk, bowled by Rachin Ravindra for three runs.
From here it was the Mitchell Owen show as he first got the huge wicket of Matthew Short for 67. The batter scored his runs off 40 balls with four boundaries and six maximums. Owen then struck successive balls to get rid of Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd in the 13th over. The Australian then dismissed Haris Rauf for ten and Brody Couch for a duck to register his maiden fifer in T20 cricket.
Former West Indian wicketkeeper and batter Jahmar Hamilton was not out on 31 off 18 balls with three boundaries and a six. Sanjay Krishnamurthy was only the third Unicorns batter to get into double figures as he scored 24 off just 21 balls. Mitchell Owen ended with figures of five for 17 from his three overs as Freedom won the game with ease.
Glenn Phillips helps Washington post decent total on the board.
Earlier it was Washington who batted first and scored 169 on the board for the loss of six wickets. Four wickets fell in the powerplay over as the Unicorn bowlers ran riot. Owen was out to Xavier Bartlett in the first ball of the game, while Andries Gous was out in the fourth ball of the opening over. Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Maxwell soon perished to leave their side in trouble at 30 for 4 in the fifth over.
Jack Edwards and Glenn Phillips joined forces to add 71 for the fifth wicket in 63 balls. Bartlett got his 4th wicket of the day when he dismissed Edwards for 42 caught by Jake Fraser-McGurk in the 16th over. Glenn Phillips scored 58 off just 39 balls with two boundaries and three sixes before falling to Romario Shepherd. Obus Pienaar scored 12 runs off 30 balls and added 37 runs for the seventh wicket with Mukhtar Ahmed to take Washington to a decent total on the board.
