Australia asserted their dominance over Sri Lanka in the first match in Galle on the fourth day. The hosts were asked to follow on after Australia took a massive lead of 489 runs on Saturday. When lunch was called, Sri Lanka were 75/3, with Dinesh Chandimal being dismissed by Nathan Lyon.

The veteran Australian spinner achieved a rare feat when he dismissed the same batter in the same session. Chandimal was out in the first inning, while trying to reverse sweep Lyon when he was batting on 72. Umpire Adrian Holdstock gave Chandimal out but the batter decided to take the review, which went in favour of the bowling side.

Having been asked to follow on, Sri Lanka had lost both their openers early. Angelo Mathews joined Chandimal as the pair batted well to put up some fight. In the second ball of the 18th over, Chandimal lunged towards the ball and got a very fine edge off his glove that flew to Travis Head at forward short leg.

The entire Australian went up in appeal but the umpire gave it not out. Steve Smith decided to review the call as the visitors were confident the batter was out. Once the replays came on the screen, it was seen that there was a light touch off the batter’s gloves. Chandimal was out for 31 after facing 49 balls with two hits to the fence.

Matthew Kuhnemann’s fifer helps Australia take complete control in Galle

Rains halted play early on day three of the first Test in Galle, with the hosts placed at 136/5. Chandimal was the overnight batter with 63 runs, along with Kusal Mendis batting on 10 runs. It took Australia just 37 balls to pick the first wicket of the day, as Kuhnemann had Kusal Mendis’ wicket of 21.

Dinesh Chandimal batted well to score 72 off 139 balls but after his wicket, the hosts crumbled against Australia’s spin barrage. Matthew Kuhnemann got his second Test fifer when he dismissed Jeffrey Vandersay to bowl out Sri Lanka for 165 runs.

Oshada Ferando was out for six runs when a sharp inswinger from Mitchell Starc had him LBW in the third over. Former skipper Dimuth Karunaratne left a straight ball from Todd Murphy to see his stumps get rattled for a four-ball duck. Mathews and Chandimal added 69 runs for the third wicket in 14.1 balls before Chandimal was out for 31. At lunch, Matthew was batting on 34 off 41 balls with five hits to the fence.
