During Day 2 of England's final Test match against Sri Lanka at The Oval, seamer Chris Woakes found himself forced to bowl off-spin due to poor lighting conditions in London. The dim visibility made it unsafe for Woakes to bowl at his usual pace, prompting him to switch to spin, much to the amusement of his teammate Joe Root.

Woakes' bowling action mimicked Root's off-spin style, although his deliveries lacked precision, resulting in several half-trackers. The England batter and occasional off-spinner, Root, couldn’t help but laugh at Woakes’ struggle to maintain line and length during his short stint as a spinner. His hilarious reaction to Woakes’ performance became a lighthearted highlight of the day's play.

Despite the humour of the situation, Woakes quickly reverted to his primary fast-bowling role once the light improved. It didn’t take him long to make an impact, as he dismissed Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis for 14 in the 11th over. This wicket was crucial as England had already built pressure on Sri Lanka by taking three quick wickets in the first 15 overs of their innings.

England posts a competitive total against Sri Lanks

Earlier in the day, England had put up a competitive score of 325 runs, largely thanks to stand-in captain Ollie Pope’s rapid 154. However, a sudden collapse saw England lose their last six wickets for just 35 runs, getting bowled out in 69.1 overs.

At the time of the Sri Lankan innings, the visitors were struggling at 86/3, with key players Dimuth Karunaratne, Mendis, and Angelo Mathews back in the pavilion. Pathum Nissanka, however, was providing resistance, remaining unbeaten on 60 off 48 balls and was joined by Dinesh Chandimal in the middle.
