India’s legendary spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin has added another feature to his cap. The 38-year-old was bestowed with the Padma Shri award on Monday by Indian President, Smt. Draupadi Murmu. The video of Ashwin’s huge moment was shared by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their social media handles.
BCCI wrote “Congratulations to @ashwinravi99 on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Hon'ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn, honouring his remarkable achievements and an illustrious career with #TeamIndia”. Ashwin retired from all forms of cricket late last year after the Brisbane Test against Australia.
With 537 Test wickets, Ashwin is the second highest-wicket taker for India after Anil Kumble who has 619 Test wickets. Apart from his contributions in the Test format, Ashwin was also part of the 2011 ODI World Cup winning. In the 118 ODI games that he played, Ashwin picked 156 wickets. The 38-year-old also played 65 T20I games and picked 72 wickets.

After an impressive IPL 2010 season, Ashwin got to make his debut for India the same year in the white-ball formats. The Chennai based spinner then made his Test debut in 2011 against West Indies and became an integral part of the side for the next 13 years.
With 37 fifers, Ashwin is second on the list after Muttiah Muralitharan for most fifers in Test cricket. India’s former spinner also picked ten wickets on eight occasions which puts him level with Anil Kumble in the all-time list. Ashwin was also more than capable with the bat having scored 3503 runs with six centuries and 14 fifties. His final Test ton came against his home fans at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai in the first Test match against Bangladesh. His last Test came against Australia at the Adelaide Oval where he picked just a single wicket.
Since his retirement, Ashwin is currently playing in the Indian Premier League 2025 season. The veteran spinner has made his way back home to Chennai Super Kings but it hasn’t been an happy homecoming so far. Ashwin, has played seven games this season and managed to pick just five wickets and has been warming the benches since.
