Team India’s play to go in with four spin bowlers paid off as Varun Chakravarthy. The 33-year-old had picked five wickets in the previous game to keep his place in the team. Chakravarthy was called in to bowl the ninth over of the innings with Travis Head and Steve Smith batting together.
The first ball of the over yielded a single which Smith took a single off. In the next ball Chakravarthy switched to round the wicket. Travis Head went for a huge shot and didn’t time the ball well. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul went to celebrate with the bowler as Virat Kohli let out a huge roar. It was a key moment in the game for India against a batter who had scored plenty of runs for Australia against India. in the first ball of the match, Shami had dropped Head when the batter’s return catch was spilled.
Australia loses two wickets in the first powerplay
Opting to bat after winning the toss, Australia opened with Cooper Connolly and Travis Head. In the final ball of the third over, Shami induced an edge of Connolly’s bat that flew to KL Rahul and the Indian players began to celebrate. The umpire though didn’t give the batter out and Rohit Sharma went for the review.
Once the replays came on the screen, it was seen that the batter had got a huge edge. The next thing to do was that the catch was cleanly taken by Rahul, once that was confirmed, the batter had to make his way back to the dugout for a duck from nine balls.
Hardik Pandya was smashed for 13 runs in his second over of the day as Head hit him for two fours and a six. In the fifth ball of the same over, Head went for a quick single as Jadeja picked the ball and threw it to the bowler’s end. Had Jadeja hit the stumps on the full the batter would have been out as Indian players were left with their hands on their heads.
Mohammed Shami was then hit for three successive fours as Head began to assert himself against India. With the seamer proving to be costly, Rohit decided to bring his spinners into play and that proved to be a masterstroke. After ten overs, Australia were placed at 63/2 with Smith batting with Marnus Labuschagne.
