After guiding India to the much-awaited and historic ICC Trophy with a triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the World Champion skipper Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement on an emotional note. The 37-year-old made this announcement during the post-match press conference and the media interaction after the thrilling 7-run win against South Africa in the thrilling summit clash of the tournament.

“This was my last game as well,’ said the India skipper in an announcing tone while he indicated the retirement of former skipper and Final’s ‘Player of the Match Virat Kohli.

"I've enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. It's a better time to say goodbye to this format. I've loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted – I wanted to win the cup,” he added later.

Rohit Sharma dedicates T20 World Cup 'triumph' to head coach Rahul Dravid

Besides announcing his retirement, Rohit Sharma also dedicated India’s T20 World Cup win to the head coach Rahul Dravid. Interestingly, it was also the last assignment as India's head coach for the former legendary batter.

“What he has done for Indian cricket for the past 20, 25 years, this was the only thing left. I am thrilled on behalf of the entire team that we could do this for him,” Rohit said.

“I am thrilled on behalf of the entire team that we could do this for him,” he added while praising his teammates, alongside the retirement-fellow Virat Kohli.
