The long wait was finally over as the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off at the Eden Gardens with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clashing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 22. However, KKR had to face a one-sided loss as RCB defeated them by seven wickets and 3.4 overs to spare.
Meanwhile, the frustration was quite visible in KKR’s camp as during the 15th over of the second innings, pacer Harshit Rana was captured giving an animated reaction after Rinku Singh made a casual fielding blunder. RCB skipper, Rajat Patidar, played a cut shot off Rana’s slower ball, Rinku positioned at the backward point, tried to stop the ball with one hand but it slipped away and went for a four after which Rana shook his head in disappointment.

Talking about the match, RCB won the toss and asked KKR to put runs on the scoreboard. The defending champions didn’t have a great start as their brand-new opener, Quinton de Kock, went back to the pavilion after scoring just four runs. However, skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine steadied the ship later by building a quick 103-run partnership for the second wicket.
During the 10th over of the innings, Rasikh Dar Salam provided the much-needed breakthrough to the team by dismissing Narine on 44 runs. Rahane also followed him to the pavilion as Krunal Pandya removed him in the very next over. And it was the turning point of the match as no other KKR batter was able to contribute much to the team and they were bundled out for just 174 runs in 20 overs.
Chasing the target, RCB were given a solid start by openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli who stitched a 95-run stand for the first wicket. Salt smashed a quick half-century, featuring nine fours and two sixes. Kohli also played an unbeaten 59-run knock and helped his team to get past the victory line comfortably.
