England’s Champions Trophy 2025 tournament is set to end with yet another bad batting display against South Africa. Outgoing skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first and saw his side collapse to 129 for 7 in just 26. Marco Jansen who had taken three wickets in the powerplay overs, made it a game to remember for himself
On the fifth ball of the 20th over with Keshav Maharaj bowling to Brook, the batter went for a huge slog. Brook couldn’t time the ball well, as his mistimed shot was well taken by Marco Jansen. The tall South African pacer ran with his eyes on the ball and then stumbled to complete the grab.

Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament. Steve Smith and his side shared a point with Afghanistan after their game on Friday was abandoned due to rain. For Afghanistan to qualify, England has to beat South Africa by a huge margin. If South Africa wins, they will go in as the top-ranked side in Group B and will take on the second-placed team in Group A in the semis.
England batting left in complete tatters by Proteas bowlers
Phil Salt began the game by hitting two fours in the opening over off Jansen. The right-handed batter was caught by Rassie van der Dussen in the final ball of the first over. Marco Jansen then got the wickets of Jamie Smith for a duck and Ben Duckett for 24 in what was a great start for him in the game.
Joe Root and Harry Brook then added 62 runs for the fourth wicket in 61 balls. The pair batted with aggression, with Root in particular showing his form with the bat. England’s former skipper had scored a century in the last. After the fall of Brook for 19 runs, Joe Root was outbanned by Wiaan Mulder for 37 runs.
Liam Livingstone was out for nine runs when he needlessly ran down the wicket to Maharaj. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton did the rest as he whipped off the bails to send the England batter back to the hut. Jamie Overton was the seventh wicket to fall as he was caught by Ngidi off Rabada for 11 runs.
