Indian coach Gautam Gambhir and star batter Virat Kohli’s celebration turned sour on Friday. Needing just one run to win the match, the men in blue lost two wickets in as many deliveries to see a certain win snatched from their hands. The first ODI match between India and Sri Lanka ended in a tie.

With India needing five runs, Shivam Dube hit a four to tie the scores. The cameras panned to the pavilion as Gambhir and Kohli were sitting side by side. Both the coach and batter had smiles on their faces and began celebrating what seemed like a formality.

Charith Asalanka dismissed Shivam Dube for 25 and this brought Arshdeep Singh to the wicket. The left-arm pacer who has grown leaps and bounds with the bat in hand was seen going for a swipe across the line. The ball missed the bat and the umpire gave it out. Arshdeep Singh went for the review but the third umpire stayed on with the on-field call.

This is when both Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli’s expressions turned sour as the match ended in a tie. Sri Lanka on the other hand were celebrating the result as they had restricted India from winning the game.

Rohit Sharma looks back on the game

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was the best batter for India as he flayed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground. The veteran opener hit 58 runs from just 47 balls which also included three massive sixes.

Speaking at the end of the game Rohit Sharma said “The scores are gettable, it's just that you have to bat well to get that score. We batted well in patches. There was no consistent momentum through the game for us. We started really well with the bat but we knew the game will start after 10 overs once the spinners come in to bowl. We had the upper hand to start with, then we lost a couple of wickets and fell behind the game”

At one stage India were scoring well above six runs per over but the loss of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Washington Sundar changed the game. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were out in quick succession, but KL Rahul and Axar Patel tried to resurrect the innings. The fall of KL Rahul yet again changed the face of the match as the home team tightened their grip and walked out with a tie.
