Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season began with San Francisco Unicorns taking on Washington Freedom in the first encounter. New Zealand batter Finn Allen scored the fastest ever century in MLC history when he got to the mark in just 34 balls. The right-handed batter also hit 19 sixes in his innings which is the most by any batter in this format of the game.
Washington Freedom skipper Glenn Maxwell won the toss and chose to bowl first. The decision came back to haunt him as the Unicorns posted a massive 269 on the board from their 20 overs. The day belonged to Finn Allen who scored 151 off just 51 balls with five boundaries and 19 huge hits.
New Zealand pair of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert came out to open the batting for the Unicorns. The first over bowled by Ben Sears went for 11 runs with Allen hitting a boundary and a six to end the over. USA pacer Saurabh Netravalkar was hit for 17 runs from his opening over as Seifert smashed two huge sixes and a boundary from the over.
Jack Edwards dismissed Seifert for 18 caught by Glenn Maxwell in the second ball of the third over of the game. The Unicorns though kept scoring runs at quick pace as they raced to their 50 in just four overs. Jake Fraser-McGurk continued his poor form when he was out for six to Saurabh Netravalkar as Unicorns ended their powerplay with the score reading 67 for two.
Finn Allen century rocks Washington
Sanjay Krishnamurthy came out with aggressive intent and smashed Rachin Ravindra for four successive sixes. Finn Allen then hit Mitchell Owen for three successive sixes and also reached his fifty off just 20 balls. The Unicorns had managed to score 45 off just 12 balls as they raced to 116 for 2 after nine overs.
The onslaught of runs didn’t stop as Allen went on an over drive to score runs and took on the bowlers. Just when it seemed the Kiwi batter could possibly go to onto achieve something huge he was out in the first ball of the 18th over to Owen caught by Glenn Phillips. Hassan Khan’s 18-ball 38 not out saw the Unicorns end their innings on a high note scoring 269 on the board.
