Young Indian batting talent Sarfaraz Khan came to the fore just when his team needed him. The 27-year-old scored his first Test ton on Saturday during the 4th day of the first game against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Sarfaraz ended the 4th day on 78 and had seen Virat Kohli fall in the last ball of the day to Glenn, Phillips much to the crowd's shock.Β

It was an emotional moment for the young batter as he had to wait a long time to get to the national side. The moment came with a four off Southee as Sarfaraz raised his helmet and he hugged his partner Rishabh Pant. The century came off 110 balls with a strike rate of close to 91. Even Pant was seen celebrating the ton as the youngster thanked his stars.Β

In the first innings, the right-handed batter from Mumbai was out for a duck while batting at number 4. In the 2nd innings, India’s batter came out with the intent to score runs and took the attack to the Kiwi bowlers. Sarfaraz played some fine cuts, dabs down to third man and two powerfully struck sixes off Ajaz Patel.Β

A new star arrives for Team IndiaΒ

After toiling long and hard for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy format, Sarfaraz Khan made it to the Test team earlier this year. In the debut series against England, the young batter scored three fifties. During the series against Bangladesh, the 27-year-old didn’t get to play a single and was released for the Irani Cup game for Mumbai.Β

Going back to play the game against the Rest of India, young Sarfaraz scored 222 not out and helped Mumbai win the title. His exploits on Friday earned him comparisons with former Pakistan batter Javed Miandad.Β

Speaking to Jio Cinema, former Indian star Ajay Jadeja said, β€œHe is a different player, and the era is also different. Fielders are not placed in the third-man area many times in Test cricket. The teams in domestic cricket are aware of Sarfaraz’s game, but in international cricket, the rivals are still learning about him, and the fielder was placed there only in the end.”

Ajay Jadeja added, β€œHe plays spinners with ease and has grown up playing spin. He used the pace, and his sixes went to mid-wicket. His V is behind. He is targetting the areas which were not touched before by a batter in Test format.”

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra said, β€œYou have to find ways to score runs, and he has his style. His success shows that domestic cricket is sending players to the national team after preparing them. He batted well against Ajaz Patel and other Kiwis bowlers and didn’t take any tension.”
