Former Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne lost his cool at Dinesh Chandimal during the opening day of the 2nd Test against New Zealand. The incident happened on the 1st ball of the 40th over.
The former Sri Lankan played the ball towards mid wicket and set off for a single. Glenn Philips stopped the ball and threw it to Tom Latham. By this time Karunaratne was near the bowlers end as Chandimal didn’t move an inch. The left-handed batter turned back and tried to make it back to the crease.
Tom Latham threw the ball at the stumps and ran out Karunaratne for 39. The veteran batter was livid at this dismissal as he turned back and let his feelings clear to his partner. Karunaratne was out for 46 after facing 106 balls with four boundaries.
Dinesh Chandimal’s century gives Sri Lanka upper hand
Dhananjaya De Silva won the toss and chose to bat first as Nishan Peiris made his debut for Sri Lanka. Tim Southee decided to go in with the same side that had played the 1st Test of the series.
Speaking at the toss, Lankan skipper De Silva said “Pitch looks quite firm with less grass, we will bat first. We want to be better, we were short by 50-60 runs which we want to get in this Test match”
Kiwi skipper Tim Southee said “Would have liked to bat first, but like the first Test we know if we bat well in the first innings we give ourselves a chance. Same team for us, back the guys to keep improving, just looking for consistency with the bowling and the batting needs to stand up”
Pathum Nissanka was the first to be dismissed as he was out for 1 caught by Tom Blundell off Southee. The 2nd wicket stand between Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal was worth 122 off 229 balls.
Dinesh Chandimal decided to put the confusion behind as he scored 116 runs off 208 balls. His knock contained 16 fours before he was bowled by part time off-spinner Glenn Phillips in the 73rd over. His stand with Angelo Mathews for the 3rd wicket was worth 99 runs that came in 200 balls.
At the time of writing, Sri Lanka were placed at 395/3 in the 87th over. Angelo Mathews was batting on 74 with 6 hits to the fence. In-form batter Kamindu Mendis was on 44 off 45 balls with 7 fours and a six.
