Stokes was a recent guest on the Untapped podcast show where he revealed kicking off the habit to get back in prime shape. The 33-year-old though stated that he might not be able to put off alcohol completely. Stokes said, “After my first major injury, I remember the shock of it, after the initial adrenaline had stopped, thinking: ‘How has this happened? We did have a bit of a drink four or five nights ago, could that have played a part? It wouldn’t have helped."

The 33-year-old last played for England in their tour of New Zealand where he scored 158 runs and picked seven wickets with the ball. So far, Stokes has played 110 Tests scoring 6719 runs with 13 centuries and 35 fifties and picked 210 wickets. England are set to host Zimbabwe for a one-off Test starting on Thursday.

‘Not had a drink since second January’ – Ben Stokes

In his appearance on the Untapped Podcast, English Test skipper revealed on being sober since the start of the year. The 33-year-old though said that sobriety could change after the end of the season but has also said that he intends to keep his new levels of fitness up for the entire cricketing calendar.

Stokes said, “Then I was like: ‘OK, I need to start changing what I do.’ I don’t think I’ll ever be completely sober but I’ve not had a drink since 2 January. I said to myself: ‘Not until I finish my injury rehab and get back on the field.’ I think the day I wake up and can’t be bothered to do the training programme is getting towards that time you don’t really want it any more. But I haven’t got any interest in stopping."

“It’s just getting harder to do everything. Hence why now I feel like I have to work so much harder away from the field, in the gym and all that kind of stuff to just give me the best chance of being out there to perform. But I’ll keep going as long as I possibly can," added Ben Stokes.
