Rashid Khan and his Afghanistan side scripted history in the T20 World Cup 2024 with their 21-run win over Australia on Sunday. It was a crucial win for the Asian side as they now are firmly back in the race for a place in the semi-finals.

After their historic triumph, there were massive celebrations on the ground as the Afghan players let their emotions out. They were seen hugging each other and basking in happiness. The joy and celebrations did not end at the stadium as a video went viral on social media showing the team celebrating vigorously as they returned to the team hotel.

All-rounder Mohammad Nabi and coach Dwayne Bravo shared a video on their Instagram handles which showed the players in high spirits inside the team bus. The entire team could be heard singing the famous ‘Champion’ song which was sung by Bravo after West Indies' triumph in the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Wasim Jaffer applauds Afghanistan’s efforts

Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote: “Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. They are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good AUS team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well played."

Speaking at the end of the game, Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh reflected on the defeat. “They probably got 20 too many. Lot of teams have bowled first in this tournament. Don't think it was won or lost at the toss. We had an off night on the field. Wasn't the easiest of wickets but both teams played on it. As I said, we got outplayed today. We just need to win and there's no better team to do it against," Marsh said.

Gulbadin Naib was given Player of the Match for his game-changing spell (4/20). The 33-year-old was thrilled to bits after the win and was happy with his performance with the ball. The veteran star got the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell for 59 which changed the game in favour of Afghanistan.

Speaking after the game, Naib said: “We beat Australia at last! It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket, our history isn’t too much so this is a great achievement. We played great cricket in the last World Cup, and this year we beat New Zealand in the group stage. Our journey starts now. We have great management and I’m very fortunate to have this team. Every game is important, we will rest tomorrow and think about it.”
