‘Wanted to show how good I am’ – Yuzvendra Chahal puts his name up for Test selection after impressive spell in county cricket

Indian cricket star Yuzvendra Chahal reveals his intention to play Test cricket after shining with the ball in just 4 matches during the County Championships.

Indian star Yuzvendra Chahal has expressed his desire to play Test cricket once more. The 34-year-old is back from England where he played for games for Northants and picked 19 wickets. Chahal also played one List A match where he picked 5/14 to take his wicket tally to 24 across all formats. 

The last time Yuzvendra Chahal played for India was in 2023. Despite being in the squad during the 2024 T20 World Cup the lanky spinner didn’t get a game. The Haryana-based star hasn’t played Test cricket for India. 

Speaking to Times of India, the Indian star said, “County cricket is tough cricket. It allowed me to showcase my skills against a very good standard of cricket. With India touring England next year, I wanted to show how good I am”. India will be touring England in 2025 where they play the home team in 5 Test matches. Rohit Sharma and his men could also play the World Test Championships final in Lord’s next year. 

Chahal thankful for his stint in England 

The veteran spinner during his chat with Times of India also said, “Firstly, I am very grateful to Brindon sir who allowed me to play in County cricket and then the Rajasthan Royal's coaches introduced me to Krish Patel, a highly-educated 18-year-old cricketer who is thought to have a very bright future in the game.”

Chahal made his County debut with the game against Middlesex where he picked just one wicket in the game. His only wicket of the game was that of Max Holdem for 25 as Middlesex won the game by 8 wickets. In the next game against Gloucestershire, Chahal went wicketless as the game ended in a draw. 

In the 3rd came against Derbyshire the 34-year-old picked 5/45 from his 16.3 overs. In the second innings the Rajasthan Royals star went on to pick 4/54 from 18 overs to help his side win the game. 

In the very next game against Leicestershire, Chahal yet again picked 9 wickets. Indian star picked 4/82 in the first innings with Rehan Ahmed being one of the known wickets. The Indian star then bowled 43 overs in the 2nd innings and picked 5/134 which also included the scalp of centurion Scott Currie for 120.
