Virat Kohli and Sam Konstas had a brief encounter during the fourth Test match between Australia and India at MCG, Melbourne. The incident took place in the 10th over when Konstas was hammering Jasprit Bumrah with his unorthodox shots. Kohli went walking towards him and deliberately walked into Konstas. Both players were heated up at that moment and hence, the argument reached the umpires.
The interesting part is the strict ICC rules and regulations prohibit 'physical contact' between players in any case of a fight or an argument. If any incident occurs, the player will be given three demerit points which will further ban the player for a game. Hence, if the match referee looks into the replays of the specific incident, he'll have evidence of Kohli making the deliberate attempt to fire up the 19-year-old player.
"According to the revised code, when a player reaches four or more demerit points within 24 months, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. These demerit points remain on a player's disciplinary record for 24 months from their imposition after which they are expunged," as per ICC's rule.
We don’t want to see any physical contact during the game: Simon Taufel
Former umpire Simon Taufel shared his insights on the incident and mentioned that the umpires might look into the matter at the end of the day and let this incident pass without banning the players. Virat Kohli and Sam Konstas both had a verbal exchange of words when the umpires intervened. Hence, the fans will have to wait for the day to end in order to know about the match referee's decision.
"We don’t want to see any physical contact during the game. It tends to get out of control. A lot of adrenaline flowing. Sam Konstas holding his ground. Virat Kohli did the same thing. It’s something out of nothing. We don’t want to see it continue. It’s something they’ll have a look at during maybe a lunch break or even at the end of the day’s play. I tend to think they’ll let that one go. That’s my view at this stage. Let the players say what they want to say. Get a few things off their chest. At times if it goes further, they’ll probably let that one slide," said Simon Taufel on Channel 7.
