Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings locked horns in the 11th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Both teams played this match at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow Stadium on Saturday, March 30. The hosts' skipper Nicholas Pooran won the toss and decided to bat first at the considerable ‘tough’ surface of the Ekana Stadium.

One surprising thing LSG came up with was that their regular skipper KL Rahul played this match as an impact player and vice-captain Nicholas Pooran was leading the side. Batting first, the veteran LSG opener Quinton de Kock played a crucial knock of 54 runs, with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

Besides him, stand-in skipper Nicholas Pooran and all-rounder Krunal Pandya also played the blistering knocks of 42 and 43 runs off just 21 and 22 balls, respectively. Pooran smashed 3 fours and 3 sixes, while Krunal Pandya went on to hit 4 fours and 2 sixes.

On the back of these three brilliant knocks, LSG posted a total of 199 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Star all-rounder Sam Curran scalped 3 wickets for PBKS at the cost of just 28 runs in his 4 overs; apart from him, Arshdeep Singh also picked 2 wickets, alongside 1 wicket each bagged by Kagiso Rabada and Rahul Chahar.

Shikhar Dhawan’s '70 off 50 balls' went in vain amidst the sudden collapse of PBKS

While chasing the target, Punjab Kings’ experienced opening pair of skipper Shikhar Dhawan and star batter Jonny Bairstow provided an outstanding opening start of 102 runs for the first wicket in just 11.4 overs. Bairstow was dismissed Mayank Yadav at the individual score of 42 runs off just 29 balls, with 3 fours and 3 sixes.

Just 11 deliveries later, Punjab Kings lost their second wicket in quick succession as Prabhsimran Singh was also trapped by Mayank Yadav; Singh scored 19 runs off just 7 balls with one four and 2 sixes before his successor Jitesh Sharma and stepped in and went back to the pavilion after scoring just 6 runs off 9 balls with a four.

However, the ‘captain of the ship’ for Punjab, skipper Shikhar Dhawan held one end strongly and played a very crucial and well-fought knock of 70 runs off 50 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. But Dhawan’s captaincy efforts went in vain as Punjab Kings failed to cross the finishing line; they could score only 178 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and lost the match by 21 runs.

Young debutant pacer Mayank Yadav scalped 3 wickets for the hosts LSG, alongside 2 wickets claimed by Mohsin Khan.
