The visiting side will probably face its toughest challenge in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2026, which will only help their preparation for the tournament. In its world title defense at home, the Indian team will need its batters to fire all cylinders. The best way to know how they might perform would be to see their performance in the upcoming T20I series against Australia

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has been elevated to the leadership role in every format since the IPL 2-25. He took over the Test and ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma and has been named the vice-captain of the T20I side. It seems as if he is naturally groomed to be the all-format Indian captain.

However, with responsibility, his performance in Limited Overs Cricket has gone slightly down. It was evident in the ODI series against Australia, where he failed to make any impact in the first two ODIs. As a result, he will be determined to perform in the T20I series.

Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma has been one of the best batters in T20Is since his debut. The Southpaw played a key role in India's Asia Cup 2025 win. Even in the bilaterals against South Africa in 2024 and England earlier in 2025, he was good. He would love to carry on the momentum to make the No.3 spot his own.

The management, however, has been trying a lot of things in the batting order. Hence, Tilak's batting position has changed in almost every match. Varma would like to play at Number 3, where he has done well. In his first tour of Australia, the Southpaw will hope to make Number 3 his own by performing against some of the best bowlers in the world.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav has been in very bad form in T20Is in 2025, quite the opposite of his exceptional IPL season for the Mumbai Indians. In 12 matches in the year, the Indian skipper has 100 runs in 11 chances at a paltry average of 11.11 and a strike rate of 105.26, with a best score of 47* to his name.

There are questions asked about his spot in the team, especially after his poor performance in the Asia Cup 2025. The best way for Yadav to justify his selection in the team would be to perform in the T20I series against Australia in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup defense.
