It was the time just after India's historic World Cup win in 2011 after defeating Sri Lanka in the final of the prestigious cricket quadrennial when the late legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal spoke about and expressed his heart out about the former Indian skipper and multiple-time ICC tournament-winning captain, MS Dhoni.

Notably, Benegal breathed last on Monday, December 23, at the age. He recently turned 90 on Friday, December 14.

Interestingly, Dhoni has also been connected with the films somehow as an ‘iconic’ biopic was made on the former World Champion skipper’s legendary cricketing career. The story revolved around Dhoni’s struggles from being a railway ticket collector to winning the World Cup for India as a skipper.

It became kind of predictable that he was a leader – Shyam Benegal on MS Dhoni

Coming back to the Late Shyam Benegal, the legendary filmmaker was also known for his great interest in the game of cricket. While speaking with Ayaz Menon in an interview back in 2011. Benegal also expressed his opinions about India’s home World Cup win and also heaped the praises on the then-skipper MS Dhoni.

“I am not surprised. Once Dhoni came onto the scene, it became kind of predictable that he was a leader who would get people to follow. The people and players playing for him feel confident and secure. And he does not destroy anyone's self-esteem. Even when they have lost, he included himself in that process. He does not criticize somebody else,” said Late Benegal to Ayaz Memon.

“So there is a manner in which he functions. He certainly seems to have a natural talent for leadership. Now I feel that this young man, Raina, was also doing a good job. But I don't know what happens to this Indian team, when they win there is this tendency to be smart. Once you win anything, you start to rest on your laurels. In short, you have to be hungry,” he added later.
