Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been given his first-ever call-up to the Indian Test side for the upcoming tour of England. The 26-year-old who is part of Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) side is set to take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2025 game on Saturday. Arshdeep is a regular in the T20 format and has also played a handful of ODI games for the Men in Blue.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a short stint with Kent in the English county season last year. With Mohammed Shami ruled out due to fitness issues, Arshdeep has been picked and is primed to make his Test debut during the course of the tour. Punjab Kings posted a short video on their social media handle ahead of the game against DC on Saturday in Jaipur.
Indian seamer Arshdeep Singh was heard saying, “All I want to say is that we have to focus on other formats as well. The focus should also be on doing well across all three formats. To all the youngsters who are watching, I want to say the thinking is ‘I just want to play’ IPL. The craze to play for India or to play Test cricket has become less, so I want everyone to focus on all formats and don’t just solely focus on money or fame.”
Can Arshdeep prove his worth in the Test format?
26-year-old Arshdeep Singh has played 21 games in first-class cricket and so far picked 66 wickets. The left-arm seamer has got two fifers in the red-ball format with a best of 6/40. Last year, Arshdeep played five games for Kent and picked 13 scalps. With the English conditions set to favour swing and seam, the 26-year-old could be the ideal choice to take the new-ball.
The left-arm seamer has played a total of 72 international games for India, out of which 63 are in the T20I format and nine are ODI matches. In the T20 format, Arshdeep has picked 99 wickets and will become the first Indian player to reach 100 international T20 wickets.
