The West Indian cricket team had a day to forget as they lost to England in their opening match of the Super 8 stages in the T20 World Cup on Wednesday. The home team saw the defending champions romp home to an easy win by 8 wickets with more than two overs left to play.

There is more bad news in the offing for the home team as their opening batter Brandon King got injured while batting. The right-handed batter, as per reports, suffered a side strain while batting.

Brandon King is now set to miss the rest of the tournament after this injury setback. The 29-year-old didn’t come out to the field as Shimron Hetmyer took over the duties as a substitute.

Shabby West Indies made to pay by England

It almost looked like the chase was a cakewalk for England as Phil Salt laid a brutal assault on the West Indies bowlers. England’s opening batter was the best batter of the day scoring 87 runs on perhaps the best batting wicket in this campaign. This knock also meant that the English batter continued his purple patch with the bat in the Caribbean.

Rovman Powell was downcast after the loss and rued the bad fielding efforts from his team. When asked about Brandon King, the West Indian captain replied, "Yes, a little bit worrying but, hopefully, he can pull through for the next game, we know how important a player he is for us."

The home team skipper also said, “When you look from the batting perspective, we were 15-20 runs short. We could have given a better display with the ball as a bowling group. We couldn't capitalise in the last five overs but credit to the English bowlers, they executed their plans very well.”

Jos Buttler, on the other hand, was happy with the way his team performed. Speaking at the end of the game, Buttler said, “That's a really good performance from us, we executed well with both bat and ball. I thought we bowled really well to restrict such a powerful batting line-up, still we had to chase it down. but smart play from us. The partnership between Salt and Bairstow was great. I brought Jof back there, Pooran and Russell coming in, two of the best batters in the world, so we brought our best bowler back in.”
