Host nation West Indies trounced Uganda by a massive margin of 134 runs to win their second of the T20 World Cup 2024. Akeal Hossein was the best bowler for the home team as he picked 5/11 form his four overs and was given the player of the match award.

Uganda have been more or less knocked out of the tournament after suffering their second loss in three games. The African side playing their first ICC  began with a 125-run loss to Afghanistan before beating Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets.

Rovman Powell won the toss and chose to bat first on a Guyana wicket which is helpful for bowlers in the 2nd half. Both sides came into the game having won their previous encounters and made no changes to their team.

Akeal Hossein spins West Indies to huge win

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, West Indies began well scoring 41 runs from the first 4.2 overs. Brandon King was out for 13 when he was castled by spinner Alpesh Ramjani. Nicholas Pooran played an enterprising knock of 22 runs from 17 balls with 3 sixes before he was out to Uganda skipper Brian Masaba.

Johnson Charles was the top scorer for West Indies with 44 runs coming off 42 balls with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes. Skipper Rovman Powell (23) and Sherfane Rutherford (22) were the other main scorers with the bat. Andre Russell then gave the finishing touches to the innings as he scored 30 off just 17 balls to help West Indies reach 173 on the board.

Akeal Hossein struck in the very second ball of the second innings sending Roger Mukasa back for a 2nd hall duck. The Uganda batter hasn’t been having a great T20 World Cup despite all the expectations from him.

Romario Shepherd and Andre Russell got the wickets of Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya before it turned into the Akeal Hossein show. The left-arm spinner ran through the Uganda middle-order to grab his maiden fifer in T20I cricket.

With this huge win West Indies also saw their names being in a few key recods in T20 Cricket

1. Akeal Hossein’s 5/11 is the 2nd best bowling figures in T20 Cricket for the West Indies. Obed McCoy with 6/17 vs India in 2022 holds the best figures.

2. The 39 all out by Uganda is the joint lowest score in the history of T20 Cricket. Netherlands were bowled out for the same score versus Sri Lanka during the 2014 edition.

3. West Indies recorded the 2nd biggest win in the history of T20 World Cup in terms of runs. Sri Lanka hold the top spot after their 172-run win over Kenya during the 2007 T20 World Cup. West Indies with their 134-run have now taken the second spot in the table.
