Suryakumar Yadav was able to reach Sri Lanka for the three-match T20I series star on Saturday. The 33-year-old could be seen walking down the steps of the Pallekele stadium along with Mohammed Siraj. The duo could be seen entering the ground and interacting with a few people near the sightscreen.

Sony Sports Network put out a tweet which read, “Now watching: Team India’s new T20I captain. Go well Surya Dada”. The tweet had garnered over 3600 views with 136 likes within an hour of it being posted.

This is the first assignment for Suryakumar Yadav after taking over as the captain post the retirement of Rohit Sharma. The 33-year-old was a key member of the Indian team which had won the T20 World Cup in West Indies a month ago.

Suryakumar Yadav’s ODI future in doubt?

In the T20 format, Suryakumar Yadav is a massive player for Team India. There are massive doubts over his ODI future though as he hasn’t performed that well for India. The former Indian opener Akash Chopra feels that Suryakumar Yadav could end up playing only the T20I format for the Men in Blue.

Aakash Chopra said “Suryakumar Yadav was a part of the team that reached the final of the last 2023 ODI World Cup. He was part of this 2024 T20 World Cup as well, the David Miller catch he took but he is now not part of the ODI team”

The former India star also said, “A question was asked about that and he said that Suryakumar Yadav is a phenomenal and special player but he will be seen playing in T20Is only and is currently not being considered in ODIs. So if he is not being considered and the Champions Trophy is about to come, you can assume that Suryakumar Yadav won't be seen there."

Speaking about the comments made by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir during the press conference, Chopra said “He (Agarkar) said that he (Gill) is a three-format player and Gautam (Gambhir) believes it's not a bad thing if he can get three-format players. They have also liked his captaincy in the IPL and against Zimbabwe, and that's why he has been made the ODI vice-captain.”
