Steve Smith and Kohli hug after match (Photograph: X)
Australian skipper Steve Smith saw his side crash out of the Champions Trophy 2025 on Tuesday. India won the first semi-final match in Dubai by four wickets to make their way into the finals. Smith who has a long-standing rivalry with Virat Kohli was seen having a wholesome moment at the end of the game.
The Aussie star could be seen hugging Kohli at the end of the game as the two sides were greeting each other. It was at this point that Smith could be seen saying something to Kohli while keeping his hands on his chest. In 2019, Kohli had asked Indian fans not to boo Smith who had come back after serving a one year ban due to the Sandpaper saga.

On Wednesday, news came out that Smith had called time on his ODI career. The 35-year-old has decided to give priority to Test and T20I cricket. Smith also revealed that he plans to play in the 2028 Olympics for Australia where cricket is set to be included.
Team India had to chase 265 runs versus Australia to win the game and reach the finals. Kohli put on a batting masterclass with his 84 runs knock before he holed out to Ben Dwarshuis off Adam Zampa. At that stage, the match was finely poised before Hardik Pandya’s pivotal cameo along with KL Rahul’s knock, which helped India win.
Speaking at the end of the game, Kohli said, “This game is all about pressure, especially big games like semis and finals and if you go deep enough into the innings, and you have enough wickets in hand, the opposition usually gives in and then the game becomes easier."
The former India skipper also said, “It's very important to control your impulses while the game is going on. For me it's about knowing how many overs are left and number of runs left.” When asked by the media after the game to if Kohli was the best chaser in ODI cricket, Smith replied, “He's arguably the best chaser the game has seen.”
