In what seems to be big news for Indian cricket fans, Shreyas Iyer, the star India batter and PBKS skipper, has officially joined the contention for Team India’s white-ball captaincy. The recent development has come to light after Iyer’s massive success as skipper for Punjab Kings in the recently concluded IPL 2025.
Iyer led the Kings to the tournament's final, where they lost to the eventual champions RCB by a narrow margin of 6 runs and ended up as the runners-up in the tournament. Earlier in the league stage, they finished at the top of the table, with nine wins, four defeats and a no-result game in their 14 games.
A report in The Indian Express understands that the Indian cricket management is seriously considering Iyer’s name in the white-ball captaincy race. The newspaper also quoted one of the major figures in Indian cricket saying, “ight now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he has also now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race.”
Iyer’s fortune changes after charismatic IPL campaign
Speaking of India’s recent white-ball leadership, the Champions Trophy-winning skipper Rohit Sharma is the team’s ODI skipper, while Suryakumar Yadav is leading the side in the T20I cricket. After PBKS’ brilliant run of form in the recent IPL season, following KKR winning the championship under his captaincy last year 2024, Iyer has emerged as a prominent choice to be considered as an Indian captain in white-ball cricket.
The 30-year-old also ended his IPL 2025 journey as the leading run-scorer for Punjab Kings, scoring 604 runs in 17 innings, including five unbeaten appearances. He scored these runs with an amazing batting average of 50.33, hitting three half-centuries. Iyer was one of the top performers with the bat for his side in the tournament and played a decisive role in the Kings’ win against the Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier.
