Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey recently spoke to Indian Express. During the course of the chat, the former Mumbai pacer was asked about the dramatic fall of Umran Malik.
24-year-old Umran Malik burst onto the scene during the IPL 2021 season where he came in as a replacement player. In his very first game, he set the pulses racing with his pace. During IPL 2022, Umran Malik bowled at 157 KPH to bowl one of the fastest balls of the tournament.
Speaking to Indian Express, Paras Mhambrey said that Umran Malik is a rare commodity in world cricket. The veteran star also pointed out the biggest flaw that Umran Malik has which has seen him lose his place in the Indian team.

Paras Mhambrey tells Umran Malik to focus on domestic cricket
During his chat with the Indian Express, Paras Mhambrey said “I think one has to build talent. Someone having express pace is a rare commodity and you see potential in him. When he burst onto the scene bowling 145-148 (kmph) - I'm not someone who get carried away with the speed gun showing 160kpmh because I don't think it is real - you realise pace was his strength”
Paras Mhambrey also went onto say “He was definitely quick and was hitting the high 140 kmphs regularly. To bowl consistently at that pace is good and he has done that. But how does he do that? In T20s, if you are not having control, you will struggle. Once you do that, you will lose the faith of the captain”
“So one has to gain control and that will happen only if he plays Ranji Trophy. That is why we are pushing him to play Ranji Trophy because when he goes through a season, even under pressure, he will be able to execute his skillset.” Paras Mhambrey said while speaking about Umran Malik.
Young Umran Malik has played 10 ODI matches and picked 13 wickets with a best of 3/57. In 8T20I matches for India, Umran Malik has picked 11 wickets with a best of 3/48 and an economy rate of 10.4 per over. His last international appearance for India came during the Barbados ODI vs West Indies in 2023.
