Soon after former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir took over the head coach's position, a big change occurred regarding India's T20I captaincy. While Hardik Pandya was Rohit Sharma's deputy in the T20 World Cup 2024, he's put on hold for the captaincy position in the shortest format of the game. Now, Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as one of the contenders for the captaincy position, as per reports.
"Hardik Pandya was India’s T2O vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. He is completely fit and available for the three-match T20I series and was supposed to lead the side but there is a very strong feeling that SKY would be the potential leader not only for the Sri Lanka series but till the 2026 World Cup," said a BCCI source.
Moreover, according to reports, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajith Agarkar are quite certain about their decision and have informed Hardik Pandya. The reason behind this is long-term time stability, which is lacking in Pandya due to injury. Hence, SKY can be a better option as a captain who'll be available for all the matches.

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are forerunners for captains in ODI format
The upcoming Sri Lanka series will be interesting for two reasons: a captaincy change and Gautam Gambhir's approach to the team. While Gambhir is set to take on the responsibilities as the head coach, selectors are looking for a new captain for formats T20I and ODI.
Reports suggest that KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are the strong contenders for the ODI format in the upcoming Sri Lanka series. There are no official statements on this news, but the squads will be released shortly to clarify this situation. While KL Rahul has captained India several times, this might be Gill's first series as captain.
