Rahul Dravid likely to replace Kumar Sangakkara as Rajasthan Royals’ head coach

Former Indian cricket coach Rahul Dravid is all set to replace Kumar Sangakkara at Rajasthan Royals. The Sri Lankan legend is likely to take over the England white-ball job left vacant with the exit of Matthew Mott. 

Rahul Dravid who was associated with Rajasthan Royals as a player for three seasons. The former Indian legendary batter then took over as the coach of the team for a few seasons. 

Once his stint with the IPL side ended, Rahul Dravid took over the National Cricket Academy. This was followed by his stint with the under-19 teams where he reached the finals of the 2016 World Cup and won the 2018 title. 

Can Rahul Dravid end the Royals’ title wait?

Rajasthan Royals will look at the esteemed pedigree that Rahul Dravid carries to end their wait for the IPL title. The Jaipur-based franchise won the title during the inaugural edition under their former skipper late great Shane Warne. 

Under the tutelage of Rahul Dravid, Team India reached the finals of the World Test Championships in 2023. Rohit Sharma and his men then reached the finals of the ODI World Cup which was initially set to end Rahul Dravid’s term as the coach. 

BCCI and Rohit Sharma convinced the 51-year-old to sign for an additional six months and it bore fruit. The men in blue ended their long wait for an ICC title as they won the T20 World Cup. 

Rajasthan Royals have been in the running for the title and have reached the finals of IPL 2022. Kumar Sangakkara has moulded players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Riyan Parag into better performers. 

Kumar Sangakkara and Rahul Dravid were highly mentioned to take the England white-ball job. It now seems that the former Sri Lankan legend is the only name in the running for the coveted post. 

According to an ECB source, the interview process is set to begin soon. The source also went on to say that no names were being shortlisted. Kumar Sangakkara is already in England as a part of the commentary team for the ongoing Hundred League tournament.
