Chennai Super Kings are one of the most successful and loved teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. The defending champions are set to take on Royal Challengers in their final game in the group phase match on Saturday at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Ahead of the massive game, former Indian star Virender Sehwag has made a huge claim. According to Virender Sehwag, the CSK franchise had first made overtures to him ahead of MS Dhoni just before the IPL 2008 Auctions.

Virender Sehwag, one of the most flamboyant batters of his era was a huge hit in the shortest format of the game. The right-handed batter was part of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni.

Virender Sehwag makes huge claim about Chennai Super Kings

Former Indian batter and World Cup winner Virender Sehwag was recently in conversation with Fever FM. The 45-year-old said that Chennai Super Kings namely VB Chandrasekhar had called him and asked him to decline a chance to become an icon player for Delhi.

Sehwag further said that he was the man approached to play for the franchise first ahead of MS Dhoni. “VB Chandrashekhar was selecting the players for CSK. He phone-called me and said, 'we want you to play for CSK. Delhi Daredevils want you to be their icon. Don't accept the offer'. I was like, fine, we will see”

In the end Virender Sehwag didn’t go into the auctions as became the icon player for the Daredevils side that is now known as Delhi Capitals. “Finally, I received the offer from Delhi Daredevils to be their icon player and I accepted it. I didn't go into the auction. If I were a part of the auction, CSK would've bought me and made me the captain of the side. But then, they bought MS Dhoni and made him the captain”

Chennai Super Kings made it to the finals of the first edition before losing to Rajasthan Royals. Delhi Dardevils on the other lost in the Semi-Finals despite boasting of some huge names. MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to 5 titles last of which came last year in 2023. The closest Virender Sehwag came to winning the title was with the Punjab Kings in 2014 before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals.
