The Sri Lankan cricketer's father suffered a sudden heart attack when his son conceded five sixes against the Afghanistan star. Nabi learnt the incident and was deeply moved by it, which led to him addressing the unfortunate incident.
In one of the viral videos on social media, Nabi's interaction with a fan was revealed, where he learnt that Wellalage's father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away after his brutal assault in the last over of the first innings. Nabi was shocked to hear the incident and apologized from his part after Afghanistan was eliminated from the Asia Cup 2025.

After the match, Nabi took to social media and sent his message for Wellalage and his family members. He wished them to stay strong in the tough times. "Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong Brother," the veteran wrote on his handle on X.
What happened in the last over of Afghanistan's innings against Sri Lanka?
Afghanistan managed just 137 runs in their first 19 overs when Wellalage was asked to bowl the last over of the innings. Noor Ahmad took a single and gave back the strike to Nabi. The veteran smashed a six over the long off. He followed it up with a six over the deep mid-wicket region.
