Mitchell Marsh to lead Australia in ODI and T20 series against India
Australia has announced its squads for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, along with the first two-match T20I squad for the bilateral tour beginning on October 19 in Perth. With Pat Cummins sidelined due to a back Lumbar bone injury, he will be replaced by Mitchell Marsh, who will also make his debut after a long period of time. Mitchell Marsh will captain both formats as Australia looks to fine-tune combinations ahead of the busy home summer schedule featuring the Ashes starting November 21 and preparations for the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
The ODI Squad sees the return of their star pacer Mitchell Starc, who earlier missed the South Africa tour to manage his workload ahead of the Ashes. The team also includes Matthew Short, Mitchell Owen, and Matthew Renshaw, selected after strong domestic performances and recoveries from injuries. Renshaw is in line for his ODI debut and has impressed with consistent performances for Australia A and Queensland.
Australia's ODI and T20 Squads for India Series
The ODI squad strikes a perfect balance between youth and experienced players. Travis Head, Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly, and Josh Inglis add batting depth, while the pace attack would feature Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Ben Dwarshuis, with lone spinner Adam Zampa in the 15-member squad. Sean Abbott, Aaron Hardie have been rested, while Alex Carey will miss the opening ODI due to Sheffield Shield commitments but will then return to the squad.
Besides ODI, the board has also announced their first two matches T20 squad with plans to provide flexibility to their players to prepare for the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. Josh Inglis and Nathan Ellis will return to the squad after injury and paternity leave, while Glenn Maxwell will remain unavailable due to a wrist injury.
"We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 serie,s as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket," chair of selectors George Bailey said. "The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it's an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead."
