Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was left frustrated at the lack of help on offer during the opening day of the Gabba Test. Overcast conditions had raised hopes of early movement but the pitch didn’t seem to aid the pacers. Australian openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney found it easy to navigate the bowling.

Star Sports put out a video of Bumrah airing his frustrations which was caught on the stump mic. The 31-year-old pacer was heard saying, “Nahi ho raha swing aise bhi, kahi bhi kar” (There is no swing at all, no matter where I bowl). Play was stopped with Australia on 28/0 after facing 13.2 overs with huge downpour forcing players to leave the field.

Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first and made two changes. Ravindra Jadeja and Akash Deep came into the team for Harshit Rana and R. Ashwin. Australia had made one change to the team with Scott Boland making way for Josh Hazlewood. Usman Khawaja was batting on 19 with Nathan McSweeney on 4.

Former Australian star urges Usman Khawaja to retire from Test cricket

Meanwhile, the pressure is mounting on opening batter Usman Khawaja. The veteran batter hasn’t been in the greatest of forms with the bat during the previous two games of the series. Former Australian pacer Brendon Julian has asked Khawaja to retire due to his poor run of form.

Brendon Julian while speaking to Fox Sports News said, “Opening the batting in this series has been extremely difficult and I think as you get older – he’s 37. I know he’s come out in the press and said ‘I’d like to make it to the next Ashes series.' I just can’t see that personally.”

The former left-arm pacer also added, “I actually think he probably should finish up this series in Australia, go out on a high. I just don’t like it when players try and hang on that little bit longer and as you get older and when you’re batting, you’re opening the batting against quality bowling with new balls. That is very, very difficult and as you get older, you’re just not as sharp.”

David Warner had retired from the Test format earlier this year after playing his final game against Pakistan at home. Nathan McSweeney was given his Test call up after the move to use Steve Smith as an opener failed. So far, Usman Khawaja played 75 test matches and scored over 5000 runs with 15 centuries and 29 fifties and has an average of 44.
