England’s early exit from Champions Trophy 2025 tournament saw Jos Buttler step down as the white-ball skipper. Buttler and his side ended the tournament without a win on the board. The 34-year-old made his decision public a day before their final Group B match against South Africa on Saturday.

Buttler posted a cryptic social media post with a picture which read IF by Rudyard Kipling. It is interesting that the 34-year-old has posted this cryptic message with many voices questioning his future as England’s captain before the game against South Africa . After their title win in the 2022 T20 World Cup, England has endured a frustrating time in ICC events.

The first few lines of the poem written by Rudyard Kipling reads “If you can keep your head all about you, Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, or being hated, don’t give way to hating, and yet don’t look too good, nor wise to talk". As of now it isn't clear who Buttler has taken aim at via his cryptic social media post.

England cricket set for new direction after Jos Buttler’s resignation

It has been a woeful start to the year for England in the white-ball format. Jos Buttler and his men first lost the T20 series to India. This was followed by the 3-0 ODI loss against Rohit Sharma's men before losing all their games in the Champions Trophy. In their final game against South Africa, the English side were bowled out for 179 and the Proteas went onto win by seven wickets.

Speaking at the end of the game, Buttler said “It was really a disappointing performance, we were short of our mark today, so really disappointing. I don't know to be honest, as a whole group, we are not getting the results and that takes away the confidence from us. So, it's a change of scene and we have to see where cricket takes us”

Meanwhile, England coach Brendon McCullum has made a huge statement after his team’s early exit from the tournament. Speaking to the media, McCullum said “If it’s the same person, great, if it’s two, that’s great, too. Give me a couple of weeks to work it out and get this thing back on track. Give us a couple of weeks to work it all out, sort of digest what's happened over the past month and a half, and then we will start to plot and plan our way forward from there."
