England Cricket Board (ECB) have announced a strong squad for the upcoming India tour and Champions Trophy in early 2025. Jos Buttler has been named the captain of the side for the tour of India as well as the Champions Trophy tournament. Destructive batter Jonny Bairstow has been dropped from either of the squads.
Brendon McCullum is set to take over as the coach of England’s white-ball team. The former New Zealand skipper has coaching the Test side for the last few years. After England’s dismal showing in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, the ECB appointed their Test coach to take over across all formats.
2025 begins for England with five T20I matches followed by three ODI games in India. The Three Lions then travel across the border to Pakistan where they will take part in their first ICC tournament under Brendon McCullum. It is believed that England will depart for their white-ball exploits in the sub-continent on 17th January.
Jos Buttler leads strong England side for white-ball tours
The English team will be led by Jos Buttler who has made a successful return from injury. The 34-year-old will begin 2025 with the T20I series in India where he has had massive experience. The likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are also part of the side for early-year tours.
Young Jacob Bethell is part of the ODI and T20I sides after his impressive showing during the recent tour of New Zealand. Harry Brook is also part of the side after going on a scoring spree in the Test format to claim the top spot in the rankings.
Veteran seamer Jamie Overton has been given a recall after his terrific showing during the early stages of the Big Bash League. The 30-year-old has played just 2 ODI matches and 7 T20I games and will be looking to be a key part of the side with the bat and ball. Rehan Ahmed has been picked just for the T20I series while Joe Root has been named in the ODI squads.
Adil Rashid will be expected to shore up the spin department. Liam Livingstone will not only be a key batter in the middle order but will also be expected to roll his arm over. Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse, and Gus Atkinson will vie for the 3rd seamers role with Jofra Archer and Mark Wood set to take the lead role. Jamie Smith is the 2nd wicketkeeper behind Buttler with Ollie Pope missing out.
