In the second ball of the 19th over, KKR pacer Harshit Rana bowled a short ball outside the off stump. Archer used his fast hands and hit the ball over the point region as it carried over the ropes for a six. Archer had recorded the worst ever figures in IPL history when he gave away 76 runs from his four overs against Hyderabad.

Ajinkya Rahane decided to bowl first after winning the toss at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Both teams made one change each as Sunil Narine was replaced by Moeen Ali for KKR while Wanindu Hasaranga came in for Fazalhaq Farooqi for RR.

Sanju Samson was out after scoring 13 runs when he was bowled by Vaibhav Arora to give KKR their opening wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag went after the KKR bowlers with the pair hitting sixes at will. The introduction of spin changed the course of the game.

In the space of 19 balls, RR lost four wickets to slide to 82 runs for the loss of wickets at the end of 11 overs. Varun Chakravarthy got the wickets of Riyan Parag and Wanindu Hasaranga while Moeen Ali dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana. Dhurv Jurel who had scored a fifty in the last game continued his good form as he top scored for the Royals. Jurel scored 33 off 28 balls with five hits to the fence while Archer ended with 16 off just seven balls with two sixes. Speaking at the mid innings break, Chakravarthy said, “Today was a good wicket for me. It was holding a bit. It wasn't turning square but it was just holding a bit and I could stick to my lengths. he pitch is slow, some smart batting will help. He was looking in great touch, Riyan. The six he hit off me, I just thought the ball I bowled previously was a little short and I just wanted to stay a little more fuller and see what's happening with the pitch, it just got the edge."
