In what seems to be a big blow for England and the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the star pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of all forms of cricket for the next four months due to a knee injury. It also marks his complete absence from the upcoming high-octane five-match Test series against India this summer in June.
The veteran pacer went through a surgery in London yesterday morning. The ligament damage was confirmed in the scans. Notably, Wood sustained this knee injury during the Champions Trophy 2025’s group stage match between England and Afghanistan in Lahore last month.
“I'll be back firing on all cylinders” – Mark Wood
Wood getting ruled out from all forms of cricket for the next four months also transliterates into the fact that his IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), will also be missing his services during the entire IPL 2025. The franchise had retained him for an amount of INR 7.50 crores. LSG are expected to announce Mark Wood’s replacement very soon, ahead of the start of IPL 2025.
“I'm gutted to be out for so long after representing England across all formats since the start of last year. But I've got every confidence that I'll be back firing on all cylinders now that I've been able to sort my knee out,” said Mark Wood in an official statement on Thursday.
“I want to thank the surgeon, the doctors, staff, my England teammates and coaches for their support - and, of course, our fans. I can't wait to get back and contribute to what is going to be a huge 2025 for us as a team,” he added later.
Apart from the loss for LSG in IPL 2025, England will also be looking ahead to line in a perfect like-to-like replacement of Mark Wood in their national squad for the upcoming major international assignments. It also includes the five-match Test series against India in June later this year.
