Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began their Indian Premier League (IPL) season with a four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians. Rachin Ravindra scored an unbeaten 65 off 45 balls with two boundaries and four huge sixes. This also included the winning hit for six off Mitchell Santner to seal the game with five balls to spare.
Mumbai Indians, who were put into bat first, could score only 155 runs from their 20 overs. Tilak Varma with 31 runs was the best batter for his side; Suryakumar Yadav scored 29 while Deepak Chahar hit 28 not out from 15 balls to help MI reach a decent total on the board.
Noor Ahmad was the best bowler for CSK, as he claimed four wickets for 18 runs from his full quota of overs. Khaleel Ahmed was the second-best bowler with 3 wickets for 29 runs from four overs, which included the wicket of Rohit Sharma for a duck. Nathan Ellis and R. Ashwin picked one wicket each of the hosts.
Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s fifties help CSK gain easy win
Chasing 156 to win, Chennai lost Rahul Tripathi early for two runs. The pair of Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad then added 67 runs for the second wicket in 37 balls. Gaikwad scored his fifty off just 22 balls with six boundaries and three huge sixes. The CSK skipper was out for 53 to give Vignesh Puthur his first wicket in the IPL.
Chennai lost Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda to Puthur as they slid to 107 for four in the 12th over. Will Jacks then made it 116 for the loss of five wickets when he castled Sam Curran for four runs. Ravindra Jadeja came to the crease and helped Rachin Ravindra added 36 runs for the fifth wicket in 27 balls.
With this loss, MI now has extended their streak of not winning the opening game of the season. Mumbai heads to Ahmedabad to take on the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium next. Chennai, on the other hand, will head to the Chinnaswamy Stadium to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru next.
