Mumbai Indians (MI) finally ended their winless record against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday. Hardik Pandya and his side beat LSG by 54 runs to temporarily go second in the points table with 12 points from 10 games. Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals also have 12 but after having played just eight games. The winner of the second game on Sunday between Delhi and Bengaluru will go top of the table.
Rishabh Pant won the toss and put Mumbai Indians into bat and saw the hosts score a massive 215 on the board. Ryan Rickelton started the onslaught with his knock of 58, which came off 32 balls. Suryakumar Yadav then scored 54 off just 28 balls to take ownership of the orange cap. Mayank Yadav, playing his first IPL game of the season, got the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.
Naman Dhir and debutant Corbin Bosch gave the finishing touches to the innings. The pair added 28 runs for the seventh wicket in 13 balls, with Dhir scoring 25 not out from 11 balls while Bosch was out for 20. The best bowlers for LSG were Mayank Yadav and Avesh Khan with two wickets each.
Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance helps MI win the game
Aiden Markram got the run chase going with two fours in the first over off Trent Boult. Jasprit Bumrah got MI their first wicket when he got the wicket of Markram for nine runs. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran then added 42 runs for the second wicket in 21 balls. Pooran hit Deepak Chahar for three successive sixes to give LSG the much-needed boost with the bat.
Will Jacks changed the game in the seventh over of the game when he first got rid of Pooran for 27. Rishabh Pant was then out for four runs off two balls when he was caught by Karn Sharma to give Jacks his second wicket of the over. Ayush Badoni and Marsh added 46 runs for the third wicket in just 29 balls. Just when the pair were looking dangerous, Boult first got the wicket of Marsh for 34 and then dismissed Badoni for 35.
The best bowler for MI was Bumrah, who ended with four wickets for 22 runs from his four overs. The 31-year-old came back into the attack for his second spell and got the wicket of David Miller for 24 in the second ball of the 16th over. In the same over, Bumrah got the wickets of Abdul Samad for two and Avesh Khan for a golden duck to put MI on the cusp of a huge win. This win was also Mumbai’s first against LSG in the league stage phase in the IPL.
