Former England skipper Jos Buttler scored 97 not out as Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Delhi Capitals by seven wickets. Match number 35 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw over 400 runs being scored. It is a huge win for GT as they end the halfway stage of the tournament at the top of the table. Delhi Capitals have slid down to second in the table after the loss.
Titans needed 10 runs to win from six balls as Rahul Tewatia took strike against Mitchell Starc. The Aussie pacer had bowled a perfect final over in the last game against Rajasthan Royals to eke out a tied game. Tewatia though smashed the first ball for a six and then got a faint tickle to the fine leg region for four runs to seal the game.
Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first and saw Delhi conjure up 203 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Skipper Axar Patel was the best batter for DC with 39 runs from 32 balls, while Ashutosh Sharma scored 37 runs off 19 balls. The best bowler for the home side was Prasidh Krishna, who picked up 4/41 from his four overs.
Gujarat Titans coast home to easy win on the back of Buttler’s heroics
Chasing 204 runs to win, skipper Shubman Gill was run out for seven runs. Karun Nair displayed excellent fielding skills to throw down the stumps at the bowler's end. Sai Sudharsan then added 60 runs for the second wicket with Buttler in 35 balls. Sudharsan scored 31 runs to overtake Nicholas Pooran and become the top run getter in IPL 2025.
Just when the batter was starting to look dangerous, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a short ball which Sudharsan hit straight into Tristan Stubbs’ hands. Sherfane Rutherford, who had earlier replaced Ishant Sharma as the impact player, scored 43 off 34 balls with one four and three sixes.
The man of the moment was Jos Buttler, who stayed not out on 97 runs. His knock came off just 54 balls with 11 fours and four huge sixes. Titans won the game with seven wickets in hand and four balls left to play. Delhi will next play Lucknow Super Giants in the return fixture, while GT take on Kolkata Knight Riders away from home on Monday.
