Mumbai Indians (MI) won their third game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season on Thursday in front of their home fans. The four-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) also kept MI in with a realistic shot of making it to the playoffs with seven games left to be played. While all the focus has been on Will Jacks for his splendid bowling and batting, Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah stole the show with the ball with yet another masterclass.
The 31-year-old bowled four overs for 21 runs and claimed the wicket of Heinrich Klaasen for 37. In the previous over against Deepak Chahar, the South African had scored 21 runs to give SRH the much-needed momentum in the backend of the innings. In the first ball of the 19th over, Klaasen missed Bumrah’s full toss and lost his off-stump.
In either side of Bumrah’s penultimate over of the innings, MI had conceded 43 runs from just two overs. In the context of the game and how the pitch played out, Bumrah put in a lion-hearted performance with the ball after looking rusty in the first two games of his comeback.
Jasprit Bumrah: The difference maker with the ball
Hardik Pandya turned to Jasprit Bumrah as early as the fourth over of the innings. The 31-year-old gave away just seven runs with Abhishek Sharma hitting the only boundary of the over. In the next over, Bumrah used the slower balls well and made the batters lose their shape, as just three runs came from the over.
In his four overs, Mumbai’s spearhead bowled eight dot balls to put pressure on the SRH batters. The battle against Travis Head is a great case study for bowlers who want to know how to bowl in the powerplay overs. In the first ball of the sixth over, Head went for a slog and missed the slower ball bowled by Bumrah. In the same over, Bumrah bowled two full-length balls that yielded no runs.
By the time Bumrah came back into the attack to bowl the 16th over, SRH were placed at 105 for the loss of three wickets. Six runs came off the first four balls while the fifth ball of the over was a dot ball. Bumrah then bowled a perfect yorker to Klaasen to close out the over, which saw seven runs being scored.
As the tournament heads into the second half, Bumrah’s role for MI will be crucial, especially at home. The next game is against Chennai Super Kings, a team under MS Dhoni, which has seemingly found a second wind. Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Mahela Jayawardene will have to chart out a plan along with Bumrah to keep the CSK batters at bay. The plan to contain SRH batters may have succeeded to a huge degree, but CSK is an entirely different entity. MI fans will hope that their ‘Boom ...Boom’ can turn in another match-winning spell and help MI win their fourth game of the season.
