IPL 2024: Can GT still qualify for playoffs if their match against KKR washed out? Check out possible scenarios

Gujarat Titans (GT) are supposed to host the 63rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday, May 13. But it looks like they won't get a chance to play the game due to heavy rain in Ahmedabad and the ground is fully covered. Reports from the venue are all negative as the rain continues to be intensifying to spoil the fun.

Today's game was more essential for the hosts than the visitors. Kolkata, who are currently at the top of the points table, have already qualified for the playoffs with 18 points. Including today's match, they have two more matches left in the league stage to secure the top two spots in the league stage.

However, GT are in dire straits after a lacklustre campaign. With an impressive 35-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the last match, GT kept themselves alive in the tournament. But with just two matches left (including today's match), they have just 10 points in their kitty. The maximum number of points they can reach if they win both games is 14, but a playoff berth is still not assured due to a poor net run rate of -1.063. 

What happens if the match against GT is washed out?

The toss is still delayed due to rain at the Narendra Modi Stadium, making the game seem impossible. If the match is called off, then the host GT will be out of the tournament. If the match is washed out due to rain, the two teams will share a point each, which will take GT's point tally to 11.

Even if GT wins their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (GT), they can only reach 13 points, the minimum cut-off for playoff qualification is 14 points.  Meanwhile, the table-toppers KKR will solidify a top-two finish if points are shared. It will also help some other teams like CSK, RCB, LSG and DC who are vying for a spot in the last four.
