India's first-ever T20I match in Australia was played in the 2007/08 tour, which they lost badly by 9 wickets. Since then, India has not lost a series in Australia in T20 Internationals, displaying great domination outside of home. While India tied the series in the 2011/12 and 2018/19 tours, they won the series in the 2020/21 tour and achieved a clean sweep in the 2015/16 tour.

India's record at home against Australia has not been great. They lost to Australia in the shorter format in the 2019 and 2022 series at home. However, that did not stop the Indian team from dominating Australia in their backyard, thanks to the collectively good performances from the batting and bowling units. In 2025, India hopes to continue its streak of not losing a T20I series against Australia outside home.

India toured Australia for an all-format series in 2011/12, which included the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Commonwealth Bank Series, and a T20I series. It was a disappointing tour for India in the longer formats, as the visiting side lost the BGT without winning a game and couldn't qualify for the final of the CB series.
