Former Indian cricket coach Ravi Shastri has slammed Indian bowlers for lack of support to Jasprit Bumrah on day two of the Leeds Test on Saturday. Bumrah was the best bowler for India, `claiming all three wickets to fall. If he hadn’t bowled a no-ball in the final over of the day, Bumrah could also have accounted for the huge wicket of Harry Brook.
Speaking at the end of the day, Ravi Shastri said, “I’m really concerned about Bumrah and what his workload will be as the series progresses, because he is the one man who is expected to pick wickets every spell he bowls. I just hope someone at the other end puts their hands up.”
Naseer Hussain also chimed in and said, “With how unorthodox he is, they could have had more wickets if they had caught well off him," Hussain said. "It will be a concern for India, the drop-off from when Bumrah is bowling to the rest. But it is a small sample size; the others will get into the series."
Saba Karim was in full praise for the efforts put in by Bumrah on day two of the opening Test match in Leeds. Karim said that he was impressed with the way he bowled to get rid of Joe Root for 28 in the final hour of play on Saturday. Root was out caught in the slips by Karun Nair to give the right-arm seamer his third wicket.
“It seemed like he induced Joe Root. He is such a great batter and has scored more than 13,000 Test runs, and you even forced him to play a distant delivery. Why did Joe Root feel that he could play that ball? How far the bat was from his body. When does Joe Root make such mistakes?" said Saba Karim
The former India player also added, “However, he is Jasprit Bumrah. So there is pressure on Joe Root as well; he has to play out that spell, as he would bowl a maximum of two or three overs, and he picked up such a big wicket in such a short window. He has done such deeds repeatedly. Jasprit Bumrah writes the script, directs it, and acts as well.”
