Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has expressed his willingness to bat in any spot while putting his hand up for selection in the ODI format. The 30-year-old has been in great form with the bat and was in good run-scoring for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Iyer, was recently named the captain of Punjab Kings during his appearance on Bigg Boss 18 show.
Iyer while speaking to ESPNCRICINFO said, “I'm flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order.” The 30-year-old scored 325 runs for Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy with an average of 325 runs which also included two centuries. The right-handed batter was one of the key players for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The 30-year-old also while speaking to ESPNCRICINFO said, “KL Rahul and I played that important role in the middle during the World Cup. We had a great season together. It was just the last bit that we couldn’t execute the way we wanted to. It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy side to represent the country.”
Shreyas Iyer speaks about his time as captain with KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders won their third IPL title under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer last year. It was a surprising call made by the team to release their skipper who was snapped by Punjab Kings for a whopping INR 26.75 Crores.
Speaking about his experience as a captain with KKR, Iyer said, “When you have so much freedom, I feel that the players also understand that this particular guy is going to back me. And I am that sort of captain who believes in backing players, no matter what the situation is. I love being instinctive and sometimes I take out-of-the-box calls you won't even imagine. It works for me. And I felt that it worked for me in the IPL final as well."
With Indian selectors yet to pick the team for Champions Trophy 2025, Shreyas Iyer’s name will come up for discussion. The right-handed batter will hope to be in running for a spot in the side. The 62 match veteran for India has scored 2427 runs in ODI cricket with an average of 47 and has hit five centuries and 18 half-centuries.
