Amidst the controversies all over the country on the exclusion of star batter Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan has come up with a statement that the fans didn’t expect. Rizwan went on to clarify the reason behind omitting Fakhar from the Pakistan squad for the all-format tour of South Africa.
Rizwan, whose white-ball captaincy stint started with an amazing 2-1 ODI series against Australia in Australia, said that it was Fakhar’s illness that made management decide on Rizwan’s place in the national squad of Pakistan.
There’s nothing personal about him - Mohammad Rizwan
Just a day before the commencement of the T20I series opener against the Proteas, Pakistan skipper Rizwan spoke briefly about the exclusion of senior teammate Fakhar Zaman.
“I think the whole of Pakistan knows Fakhar Zaman, and there’s nothing personal about him that makes anyone feel like he’s being treated unfairly. I don’t think anyone knows that he’s unwell. It’s not only a fitness issue, meaning it’s not like he failed a fitness test. From what I know, he’s unwell with something like a viral fever. Because of this illness, he’s been advised to participate in the ongoing T20 tournament in Pakistan,” said Rizwan to the press.
However, there were already a lot of discussions and controversies regarding the omission of Rizwan from the Pakistan squad. The prime reason which took the headlines was a post shared by the southpaw on his X handle after the Pakistan team management dropped the former skipper Babar Azam from the national squad.
“It’s concerning to hear suggestions about dropping Babar Azam. India didn’t bench Virat Kohli during his rough stretch between 2020 and 2023, when he averaged 19.33, 28.21, and 26.50, respectively. If we are considering sidelining our premier batsman, arguably the best Pakistan has ever produced, it could send a deeply negative message across the team. There is still time to avoid pressing the panic button; we should focus on safeguarding our key players rather than undermining them,” read the X post shared by Fakhar Zaman on his official X handle.
