Sir Alastair Cook was quite happy and ecstatic with how Joe Root played in the 1st Test match against Pakistan. Root's double century brought him one step closer to breaking the legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar's record. Moreover, he became the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket after the 1st Test match. Hence, Cook praised him and his skills and revealed that he wants Root to break Sachin's record or at least get closer to it.
"I think Joe Root could set a mark, certainly on an English side, that’ll be very hard to beat. But you just never know. I hope he can get very close, if not be the first person who scores 16,000 Test runs. It'd be a great achievement," said Cook while talking to the ICC.
Root is one of the most dangerous batters in red-ball cricket. He takes his time, understands the pitch, and starts attacking the bowlers. He did the same thing in Pakistan. Even though Pakistan posted a mammoth score, England played quite sensibly and scored 823 runs in return. Root and Brook scored double and triple centuries, respectively. They went on to win the game by an innings and 47 runs.
I rang him after the end of the play: Alastair Cook
Alastair Cook opened up giving a call to Joe Root after the match. As per the former player, he didn't know what to text the Centurian, so instead, he gave him a call and congratulated him on his performance. Both share a great bond, which is a good thing. Hence, he wants Root to play well in the upcoming games for England.
"I watched the moment, then I rang him after the end of the play. I couldn't think of the right words to write in a text message. So I thought I’d just ring him, see what he was up to, and make sure he had a beer in his hand, which I think he did," added Cook.
