Team India is currently in Perth, attending the practice sessions and playing intra-squad simulation matches ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. The senior team was scheduled to play a warm-up match against the India A team, who played a 2-match series against Australia A. However, for some reason, the warm-up game was called off; instead, the squad played an intra-squad simulation game.
Former English batter Michael Vaughan spoke about the situation and was surprised to see this decision. He said, "I can’t get my head around a team like India only wanting to play an intra-squad game leading into a series against Australia in their own backyard," he said. "I just can’t see how you get yourself in that competitive mindset of consequence by playing an intra-squad game. I’m surprised that this Indian side didn’t want at least one game of cricket, and the WACA’s the perfect venue because it’s a similar pitch to Optus (Stadium), so you get used to the bounce."
All eyes will be on the senior players ahead of the rivalry clash due to their declining form. Virat Kohli has shown his fitness in the simulation game where he claimed two catches in the slips.
Jasprit Bumrah to captain India in first Test match
On account of the birth of the second child, Rohit Sharma is set to miss the first Test match between India and Australia, in Perth. In his place, Jasprit Bumrah will take on the charge of the Indian team. He was Rohit's deputy, but in his absence, he will play his role in the most important series.
The adjustment to different captains might be an issue for the players as anticipated by the cricket experts. However, they are professionals and will not get caught in such issues. Rohit will return in the second game and will captain the team for the rest of the series.
